Notes |
- In his youth he entered a textile mill in Brunswick as an operative and being advanced to the position of overseer continued in that capacity for some time. Returning to Freeport, he learned the ship carpenter's trade, and for the remainder of his life, followed that occupation in connection with farming. The Welch family was noted for great physical strength. When he was in his 69th year, and only a few months before he died, Colby S. Welch outlifted every man in the shipyard where he worked.
