Notes |
- At the age of thirteen he moved with his family to Wisconsin and then to St. Paul, Minnesota. After two years they moved to Dakota County, Minnesota and bought a 50 acre farm. In 1862 he enlisted in Company F, Eighth Minnesota Volunteer Infantry. He was at New Ulm, Minnesota at the time of the Massacre there and helped in caring for the wounded and picking up the dead. He fought against Sitting Bull under General Sulley and was stationed at Fort Ripley for a time until 1864, when he was sent to Kentucky and Tennessee. He fought in the Battle of Stone River under General Scofield in the Twenty Third Army Corps. He was discharged from the service at Charlotte, North Carolina August 13, 1865. He returned to Dakota County, Minnesota and sold his interest there and moved to Sioux City, Iowa. He resided there one year and in 1872 he settled in Murray County, Minnesota. In 1882 he moved to Otter Tail County, Minnesota where he bought land and erected buildings. Thomas may have been given the name Thomas Sinclair at birth but, as an adult, used the name St. Clair and, at times, even used it as a first name.
