Captain Allen Noyes obituary

Joined The Silent Majority.

Death of the Veteran Navigator, Public Citizen and Business Man, Captain Allen Noyes.

Captain Allen Noyes died at ten minutes past 2 o’clock yesterday afternoon at his home in this city, aged 68 years.

The captain has been in rather poor health for some time, but it was only during the past three or four weeks that his condition was considered critical, and the news of his death will be a painful surprise to many. He leaves a wife and one son, Mr. Edward Noyes, who has for many years been agent fo the O. R. & N. Co. at Astoria.

Captain Noyes was a native of the state of Maine and came here about 1871, in command of the bark Garibaldi. He commanded her on several voyages to Hong Kong, and afterwards was in command of the Alden Besse for several years. Some three years since he quit the sea, after fifty years’ active service, and settled in this city. He was an active and useful member of society, and took a deep interest in everything pertaining to American shipping interests. He was president of the Portland Trust Company and ship surveyor, and has attended to all his business up to within the past four weeks. The fact of Captain Noyes’s death has been cabled to his brother, Captain Cyrus M. Noyes, of the Coloma, who is now in Hong Kong.

The funeral will take place at 10 A.M., tomorrow, from the family residence, North Twenty-first and I streets.
