John King - Peldon vestry book 1798
John King - Peldon vestry book 1798
(Original held at Essex Record Office, reference D/P 287/8/2).

The document shows that on 22/4/1798 “John King & ditto” (i.e. John King and children) were paid 4 shillings by the Peldon Overseers. The only John King living in the village at that time was the John who was married to Elizabeth.

All of John and Elizabeth’s offspring from their previous marriages were too old to have been classed as “children” by 1798, so this document appears to be the proof that John and Elizabeth had children after they married in 1785. Unfortunately they did not have those children baptized, so I have been unable to find an actual document to prove who their children were.

From all the available papers that I have seen, I believe John and Elizabeth had two sons, James born about 1786 and George born about 1790. There is strong evidence that both those boys were born in Peldon, and everything points to them being sons of John and Elizabeth.
