He was knighted and was lord of the Manor near Ledsham near Leeds.
After the death of his first wife he sold his lands and removed with his children to New England. He was First Associate, Massachusetts Bay Company and was appointed First Assistant. He commenced the settlement of Watertown in 1630 but returned to England in 1631.
He was an original patentee of Connecticut with Lord Say and Seal, Lord Brook and others and ever maintained a strong interest in the New England Colonies.
There were no children by his second and third wives.
