    • (OBIT: Helen Corinne Beckwith, 68
GORHAM -- Helen Corinne Beckwith, 68, passed away peacefully at her Libby Avenue home in Gorham on Monday, Dec. 11, 2006. She was surrounded by her loving family after a five year courageous battle against cancer of the fallopian tubes.

Born May 11, 1938, Helen was the only child of Charles Richard and Catherine Loretta (Twomey) Noyes. She grew up on St. John St. in Portland, right next to the Deering Ice Cream Plant, where her grandfather, Charles W. Noyes, was one of the original owners.
As a young child she competed in many photography contests, winning her first National Award at the age of three. She also won many local awards. Her natural beauty and stage presence continued throughout her early life as she participated in tap dance, ballet, theater, music, and band. With her younger years full of dance recitals and theatrical productions, she later went on to become the Vice President of the Portland High School marching band, where she played both the flute and the piccolo. She graduated from Portland High School with Honors in 1956, and then attended Lake Erie College in Ohio.

Helen then went to work for the First Portland National Bank, where she met and married her husband , Floyd on Feb. 7, 1959.

She left the bank to raise their two daughters, Loretta (Lori) and Sue. She was a wonderful homemaker, a proud wife and mother, who found joy in her daughters' activities and lives. She acted as a troop leader for both her girls' Brownie and Girl Scout troops.

As her girls grew older, she returned to her career in banking with Maine Savings Bank. She started as a part time teller in the Mill Creek South Portland Branch, transitioned to a Customer Service Representative, was made an Officer of the Bank in 1986, and retired as the Branch Manager in Cape Elizabeth in 1990. After her retirement, she later worked part time for the Town and Country Federal Credit Union, and Gorham Regional Credit Union.

One of Helen's greatest joys in life was spending time with her best friend and husband, Floyd. They made several trips to Bermuda together for vacations. They were both active in candlepin bowling, and bowled as a couple for many years in the Friday night league in the Mill Creek lanes in South Portland. They also loved dancing together; particularly the jitterbug. She and her husband are both members of the Thornton Heights Lions Club. They also loved watching golf together almost every weekend. After they had both
retired, they spent a few years maintaining a non-profit candy route, filling and servicing machines together throughout much of the southern part of the state of Maine. In 1997, they made their first trip to Florida with their daughters, son-in-law, and grandchildren to Disneyworld. They fell in love with the climate, so in 1998, they bought a home in Dade City, Fla., and officially became Snowbirds, spending six months a year in Maine, and the winters in Florida.

Another source of great pride for Helen was the relationships she had with her two grandchildren, Christine and Jimmy. She would regularly be seen at school functions, soccer and hockey games, martial arts competitions, and all other life celebrations.

Helen was an avid book reader, and a passionate collector of anything related to cats. She had great talent for counted cross stitch, and created numerous personal projects for family and friends. For the past five years she was also instrumental in helping to create a written family history of her mother's descendants (the Twomeys) with her daughter Lori and her 93 year old uncle Ray Twomey.

Helen was predeceased by her parents in 1977 and 1992. She was also predeceased by a grandson, Eric A. Dubois on Dec. 24, 1987.

Survivors include her beloved husband of 47 years, Floyd A. Beckwith of Gorham; two daughters, Loretta (Lori) M. Dubois of Saco, and Sue E. Mastrian and her husband Jay of Scarborough; a granddaughter, Christine E. Hill and her husband Matt of Portland; and a grandson, Jimmy Mastrian of Scarborough. She will also be sadly missed by her beloved cat, Sam.

The family wishes to thank the following for the compassionate and loving care that was provided for Helen over the past few months: Dr. Brad Cushing, Dr. Laurie Small, Pastor Judith Blanchard, the staff at MMC, and the staff and volunteers of Hospice of Southern Maine.

Visiting hours will be held 4-6 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 13, at the Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland, where a funeral service will take place at 2 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 14. Interment to follow at Highland Memorial Cemetery South Portland.
