    Notes
    • On the 1881 census Herbert was 9 months old, living with his parents in Peldon.

On the 1891 census Herbert was aged 10 living with his parents in Peldon.

On the 1901 census Herbert was aged 20 living with father & stepmother in Virley.

Herbert must have emigrated to USA between 1901 and 1906. I have not been able to find an entry for him on ship's manifest or Ellis Island as "Herbert King". His name must have been mis-recorded.

"Herbert King, aged 27, born England, son of George King and Isabella Mortlock" married Catherine Wilson on 31/10/1906 in Manhattan, New York.

Familysearch.org has a 1920 census for Herbert King aged 42, living with wife Katherine and daughters Maryand Laura in Essex, New Jersey.

Familysearch.org also has a census 1930 for Herbert W King, aged 52, living with wife Catherine and daughters Mary and Laura in Orange, Essex, New Jersey.

Familysearch.org also has a WW2 Registration card for "Herbert William King, born 20/6/1878 in Peldon, Essex, England, living at 137 Lindsley Pl, East Orange, NJ". He gave his employer as William Becks, 209 Prospect St, East Orange, Essex, NJ.

Familysearch.org also has a US Social Security Death Index entry for Herbert King "born 20/6/1878, died September 1972 in Orange, NJ".

I have not found any record of Herbert taking out US citizenship, nor have I found a Passport for him.

All of the UK records for Herbert King are consistent regarding his birth in 1880. I can think of no reason for George and Isabella to have misrepresented Herbert's birth details.

The records for Herbert in USA give his year of birth as 1878/9. There was no Herbert King birth registered in Lexden district in 1878/9. Quite why he may have "added" a couple of years to his age when he got to USA, I do not know. Maybe there was a minimum age for residence/marriage/employment? Maybe he wanted to apply for a job and the employer was looking for someone older? Maybe there was a clerical error on a document when he first got to USA and he felt he had to carry on giving the same date? There could be any number of reasons why the dates of birth differ.

On his marriage certificate, Herbert declared that he had been born in England and that his parents' names were George King and Isabella Mortlock. There was only one "George King/Isabella Mortlock" marriage recorded in the index for England, which was the couple who lived in Peldon/Virley. On his WW2 registration card, Herbert declared his place of birth as Peldon, Essex, England.  The combination of those two documents seems to suggest that the Herbert in USA was the one born 1880 in Peldon. There is an exact match for his two Christian names, father's name, mother's maiden name and place of birth. [Jane King]

I suspect my great uncle worked in the facility Thomas Edison built in West Orange, now a national park. GE, started by Edison and originally called Edison General Electric, (but never controlled by him) made its headquarters in Schenectady NY and was the place of employment a decade later or more for Lyman Holder, Christina Tasker's husband.

"The large size of the laboratory not only allowed Edison to work on any sort of project, but also allowed him to work on as many as ten or twenty projects at once. Facilities were added to the laboratory or modified to meet Edison's changing needs as he continued to work in this complex until his death in 1931. Over the years, factories to manufacture Edison inventions were built around the laboratory. The entire laboratory and factory complex eventually covered more than twenty acres and employed 10,000 people at its peak during World War One (1914-1918)...."
