    Notes
    • Mary Ann Avis was born on 8/1/1794 in Great Wigborough, Essex. She was baptized on 9/3/1794 at St Stephen's Church, Great Wigborough. Her parents were William Avis and Mary nee Kimble. She had three full sisters and 3 half-brothers/sisters.

Mary lived with her parents in Great Wigborough until she was about 5 years old, when the family moved to Peldon.

When Mary was 14 years old her mother died (in 1808). Mary probably had to look after her younger sisters while her father worked. Her father remarried in 1810.

When Mary was eighteen years old she became pregnant. On 27th October 1812, Mary went to the Overseers of Peldon and made a statement under Oath that she was five months pregnant, that George King of Peldon was the father of the child, and that the baby was “likely to be born a bastard”, i.e. that George was not volunteering to marry her.

At that time, unmarried mothers and illegitimate children were very much frowned upon by society, and faced a very tough life. Any man who fathered a child was expected to marry the mother before the baby was born. The Peldon Overseers saw no reason why George should not accept his responsibilities, and they arranged for the couple to be married within two days of Mary's complaint.

Mary Avis married George King on 29/10/1812 at St Mary's Church, Peldon. The witnesses were James Ives and William Avis.

Mary and her husband moved to Little Wigborough after their marriage.

Their first child was born there in 1813. They had moved to Great Wigborough by 1815, where they lived for about ten years. By 1825 they had moved to Peldon.

On the 1841 census Mary and her husband George were living in Peldon with three of their children.

On the 1851 census Mary and George were living in Colchester Road, Peldon. Mary was working as a schoolmistress, and gave her place of birth as Great Wigborough.

Mary died on 6/2/1870 in Peldon of bronchitis. She was buried at St Mary's Church, Peldon. The burial register recorded her as being 75 years old (she was actually 76).

(Document PLwR17, dated 27/10/1812. Original held at Essex Record Office).

This shows that “George King of Peldon” was the father of the child that Mary Ann Avis was carrying. Within two days of Mary making this statement, the Peldon Church Overseers had arranged for George and Mary to be married.
(The child that Mary was carrying was William James King. As she was five months pregnant in October 1812, it indicates that William would have been born in February 1813, which tallies with the Baptism register entry in Little Wigborough).
