Notes |
- Although both Savage and Coffin say he, his wife, and son Thomas came to Newbury in 1635, Savage followed Coffin in the error, giving the same date of his arrival.
According to the authoritative book "Descendants of Thomas Hale" by Judge Robert Safford Hale, published in 1889, Thomas Hale arrived with his family in 1637. Note that in the Thomas Hale book, his son John was baptized (with a facsimile of the official record in the aforementioned book) at the church at Watton-at Stone, Hert England on 19 April 1635 so the documentation by Savage and Coffin is in error. R. Safford Hale continues on:

"The MHSC (4th series, vol vii, p. 19) give copy of a letter from Francis Kirby to Gov. John Winthrop, the elder from London dated 10 May 1637 below:
" To the right worshipfull John Winthrop Esquire at his house at Boston this dd. in New England.
London this 10th of May 1637
Sir, -- I wrote lately per the Hector, wherin I sent a runlet marked with your marke, contayneinge some things your son did write to me to send him. John Wood, masters mate, did promise mee & James Downeinge that he would be carefull of it & deliver it to you.
These are now to intreat you that you would be assistante to the bearer hereof (Thomas Hale my neere kinsman) in your councell and aduise to put him in the way how & where to settle himselfe in a hopefull way of subsisteinge with his family. He hath brought with him all his estate, which he hath heer orcan have dureinge the life of his mother, my sister. He had almost 200 li. when he began to make his provision for this voyage. I suppose the greatest halfe is expended in his transportation, and in such necessaries as will be spent by him & his family in the first use; the lesser halfe I suppose he hath in money, and vendible goods to provide him a cottage to dwell in, and a milshe cow for his childrens sustenance. I suppose his way will be to hire a house or a part of a house for the first year, vntill he can looke out & buy or build him a dwellinge, wherein as in other things I shall intreat you to direct him."
Your loving frend FFRA: KIRBY
The reference to Hector was the ship that came from London with Thomas and family and left on that date of the letter and arrived June 25, 1637 in Boston.
Not only is the arrival date in error, on page 2, Judge Hale offers that Coffin gets Thomas' ancestry wrong as well.
*************************************************************
Thomas Hale and his family lived along the Quascacunquen River which later became the Parker River named after Rev. Parker. Thomas was called a Glover, one who makes gloves upon his arrival to Newbury, however his considerable skills in surveying helped to establish town boundaries in Haverhill and Salisbury, Massachusetts. He and John Baker were appointed by vote of the town, “Haywards” till the town shall appoint new as of 10 August 1638. In the Samuel Coffin book on Newbury, page 292, Thomas' name appears as one of 91 proprietors declared on 7 December 1642 to be “the only freeholders of the town, and they only to have proportionable rights in all waste lands, commons and rivers undisposed, etc.” (R. Safford Hale Book page 20.)
In 1646 he was appointed Selectman and headed the list of first Haverhill selectmen. In 1651 it was documented that Little River was originally the Thomas Hale River in G. W. Chase’s book - History of Haverhill. Thomas Hale in a 14 year span owned land in Newbury, Salem and Haverhill and held town offices of Hayward in Newbury and in Haverhill he was the first selectman, constable and small claims judicator. (Thomas Hale book, page 50). He returned permanently to Newbury in 1652. Thomas Hale died in Newbury in 21 December 1682 at the age of 76.
