Notes |
- From the date on her gravestone, Magdalena was born 6 Feb 1806 in New York. She married first Ephraim Meacham in a double wedding ceremony with Eprhaim's nephew Asa Meacham who married Hannah Muzzy, in the home of Hannah's father Capt. Robert Muzzy. Asa Meacham, the son of John Meacham and Polly Harmon, was the same age as his uncle Ephraim. On 21 Dec 1821, Ephraim's sister Betsey Meacham was was married to Capt. Robert Muzzy's son Calvin.
Ephraim Meacham was the ninth of eleven children born to Isaac Meacham and Lucy Standish. His birth on 14 Mar 1801 in Pawlet, VT was recorded in a family bible, and he was baptized at the Church of Christ in Pawlet with his younger sister Betsy on 11 Jan 1804. The Meacham family moved from Pawlet, VT to Sandy Creek, NY in June 1806. Ephraim died on 5 Mar 1825 when his only daughter Juliette was two.
Following Ephraim's death at the age of 23, Magdalena married second Ira Harris. After the births of their first four children, the family moved to Mt Elgin, Ontario in 1834. While her only child by her first marriage was Juliette Meacham, Magdalena had eight children by her second marriage: Adeline Amanda, Ephraim Meacham, Eliza Ann, Ira Nelson, Electra, Sylvester, Herbert, and Lucy Catherine.
Ira Harris was born on 17 Nov 1802 in New York to Ariel and Lydia Harris and died 31 Jan 1869 in Mt Elgin. Magdelena was active with the Free Will Baptist church and Ira was primarily responsible for building the church in Mt Elgin.
Meacham family researcher Ida Meacham Strobridge listed Magdalene as the daughter of Henry and Catherine Groot in Herkimer Co., NY. There was a Henry Groat who married Catharina Stiever on 26 Dec 1793 at the Reformed Church of Claverack. Catharina allegedly died after the birth of her son Willem on 23 Mar 1794 and Henry is thought to be the same Henry who married Catharina Valkenburg. Three children were baptized at the Lutheran St Paul's church in Minden, Montgomery Co., NY to Henrich and Catharina Groot: Christina, 16 Jul 1796; Petrus, 16 Jul 1798; and Catherina, 10 Jul 1803. Henry Groot died intestate in 1808, and a letter of administration named his widow Catherine. While it's possible Magdalena may have been the daughter of Henry Groat and his second wife Catherine Valkenburg based on her 1806 birth, there is no documentation to corroborate or refute the theory. Research of James D. Groat, Jr. traces the lineage of Henry Groat back to Palatine immigrants Johannes and Walpurga Groat in 1710.
