NORWICH - Barbara Hannon Noyes, known as "Baba" to her family, passed away peacefully and gracefully on Saturday, October 21, 2017, at the age of 95.
Barbara was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts on July 3, 1922. She spent her youth in the Boston area, but eventually moved to the Barbizon Hotel in New York City when she became a flight attendant for American Airlines. It was shortly after WWII, and those were the early days of commercial air travel. Barbara loved the adventure and the independence; she was in many ways a pioneer. Right to the very end she cherished the memories of that era in her life.
Barbara was married to Harrison C. Noyes Jr on February 23, 1952 and moved to rural Connecticut – a major adjustment for this tried and true city girl. But adjust Barbara did, and together she and Harry raised six children and shepherded 10 grandchildren over the next 55 years. Most of their married life was spent in Norwich, CT, where Harry was co-publisher of The Norwich Bulletin. But Barbara's heart was devoted to their home on the Connecticut shore at Groton Long Point. The two cottages at 4 Weston Road were the emotional epicenter for all of the Noyes children and grandchildren, and "Baba" was ever the gentle and loving matriarch who welcomed all kids and visitors with equal care and kindness. All who knew Barbara or came into contact with her were the beneficiaries of her generosity, graciousness and warmth.
In addition to Harry and her family, Barbara loved gardening and travel. Her gardens and plantings were always beautiful and vibrant. Who can forget those powder blue hydrangeas at the beach house? They were stunning. And though Barbara could never get the old man to toil with her in the flower beds, she and Harry did travel extensively, enjoying many incredible adventures all over the world. Since his death in 2007, Barbara missed no one more than her beloved Harry. Now they are off enjoying their last great adventure together, at long last.
Barbara was predeceased by both her husband Harry and her son James D. Noyes. She is survived by her children Lynn Noyes & Walter Lincoln of Vero Beach, FL, Sally Dowling & Rudy Peckinpaugh of Toledo, OH, Nancy W. Noyes of Mystic, CT, Charles & Karin Noyes of Salisbury, CT and Elizabeth & Mark Sargent of Delmar, NY, as well as her ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
A celebration of Barbara's life will take place on Friday, November 17th, from 1:00 - 3:00p.m. at the 15 Water St. Gallery, part of the Mystic Museum of Art in Mystic, CT.
