Notes |
- Florence was the daughter of George H. Pendergast and Ella Worth.
On Dec 28, 1906 in Somerville, MA she married Charles Henry Morey, son of George Henry Morey and Mary P. Noyes. When his father died in 1902 George had inherited the Dr Bemis mansion and estate in Hart's Location, NH. The couple made their home there, running the Inn, farm, and sawmill. Charles was a lumberman.
They had two children, Charles Henry Jr and George Pendergast.
The couple held town offices and Charles was a state representative. In 1950 Florence was the first woman the town elected as a state representative. She also held many town offices positions. In 1948 she was responsible for the voting booths being opened early so the railroad workers could vote. Florence was a longtime state representative; her home became a must-stop for those seeking higher office. She held various town offices, including the post of selectman, to which she was first elected in 1928. Being such a small town she often held several offices at the same time. Her children also held town offices.
Around 1920 Florence and Charles separated and later divorced. Charles moved to New York and Florence became the owner of the Bemis property. She named it The Inn Unique which she ran until her death in 1978. The property remained empty several years after her death. When her estate was settled in 1980 and the mansion cleaned out 22 of Dr Samuel Bemis's daguerreotype images were sold at the estate auction, some going to museums and others to private collections. By 1984 a John Bernardin owned the property which by then was called The Notchland Inn. In 1993 Ed Butler and Les Schoof became the new owners of the beautiful Notchland Inn.
In 1930 she had donated the "Penn Scholarship Disbursement Records, 1717-1819" collection she had to Harvard University for their archives.
Florence died at Hart's Location and is buried in this peaceful little cemetery on the property of The Notchland Inn along with the previous owners Abel and Hannah Crawford, Dr Samuel Bemis, and her in-laws George and Mary Morey and their infant sons.
