In 1853 Mr. Noyes accompanied Thomas Winans to Russia and superintended the construction of the first Russian railroad between Moscow and St. Petersburg. The Emperor Alexander then placed him at the head of the Alexandroffsky Shops, where he rendered signal service to the government and was presented by the Emperor with a medal and the Order of Stanislaus.
Accompanying the medal was a letter signed by Count Tolstoi expressing the Imperial commendation for Mr. Noyes construction of screw engines for Russian Gunboats. In 1865 Mr. Noyes returned to Baltimore.
Mr. Benjamin Noyes was born in 1819 and died in 1910.
An original newspaper clipping of this obituary is in possession of Mrs. George B. Sheldon, Jr. (Helen Louise Noyes) of Falls Church, Va. Mrs. Noyes is the grand-daughter of George Enoch Noyes, the brother of Benjamin Noyes.

Notes |
- Benjamin Barnard was the oldest of four sons and two daughters born to Benjamin and Sarah Noyes in Medford, Massachusetts. When Benjamin and his youngest brother, George Enoch were in their teens they traveled to Baltimore, Maryland. Both had considerable mechanical aptitude and Benjamin became design and operating engineer for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, while his brother learned the iron foundry and machinist trade.
About 1853 Benjamin went to Russia as an assistant to Thomas Winans and was instrumental in the design and construction of the Moscow to St. Petersburg Railroad. During his stay in Russia he made many improvements in the repair and maintenance of locomotives and railway cars. He was also credited with making major advancements in the design and construction of naval gunboats, which were that nation's entire naval force until after World War I.
Medals conferred upon him by Russia, Poland and France are deposited with the Smithsonian Institution (National Museum) in Washington, D.C.
While in Russia he married Louisa Scott, of England, in St. Petersburg about 1854 or 1855. They had seven children, six of whom were apparently born in Russia.
