    Notes:

From Mrs. Holman's "Pillsbury Genealogy" it appears that William Sawyer, was born in England about 1613; crossed the Atlantic before 1641, and died at Newbury after May, 1693. Mrs. Holman discovered evidence that he was sufficiently educated to sign his name for himself; intelligent and stable enough to be chosen several times for the grand jury; firm enough to stand alone when others took the opposite course; had strength and public spirit enough to walk four miles that he might train with the militia, and the wisdom to make a deed of gift of his property while he lived instead of making a will to be quarreled over when he was dead. So far as it goes this is the picture of a good American citizen, fit to be the ancestor of a genius like S. F. B. Morse.

William Sawyer was one of the 71 original settlers of old Newbury who, as the monument says, "between 1635 and 1650, founded its minucipal, social and religious life." He came first to Salem where he received a grant of land in 1642, which tract is spoken of in the Salem records of 1659 as "Sawyers Playne."

In 1644 we find William Sawyer coming to the Parker River (Newbury) settlement. Land alongside the river was taken and his tract was at "Newbury Upper Woods" (West Parish). The tract was later called Sawyer's Hill, and was on the road that went from the Plains to Curzon's Hill.

In 1652 William Sawyer is mentioned as a "town-man entitled to buy privilege of commonage." He was elected fence-viewer April 2, 1666, and April 3, 1671; surveyor in 1676 and 77; tithing man 1679, 1680, 1685 and 1686.

He took the oath of allegience in 1678, giving his age as 63.

He and his wife, Ruth, and son, John, joined the Baptist Church at Boston 1681, and in 1682 he and his son organized a church of that faith in the West Parish of Newbury, but it soon died.

His son Samuel, other children and the Emerys are buried in the Sawyers Hill burial ground on the Moseley estate, but the oldest gravestone remaining in that yard dates 1705, William was most likely also buried there since the cemetery is on what was then his farm.

The homestead lot was deeded to his son Steven in 1693.

    Birth:
(He called himself 65 when he took the oath of allegience in 1678.)

    Will:
("I William Sawyer Sen'r of Newbury... for Divers good Causes...me thereunto Moving but Especially for... ye entire afection which I beare To my Loveing and Dutiful Son Stephen Sawyer of ye Towne... afors'd... Confirm unto him... all that my Tract of land where I now Dwell... in...
