- In 1822 he entered Capt. Partridges Military Academy at Norwich, Vermont. At the end of a year he began to fit for college, and entered Bowdoin and graduated in the class of 1830. He studied law in Portland, and at the Law School of Harvard University, and was admitted to the bar of Somerset County in the June term, 1833. In 1840, he entered the Theological Seminary at Newton, Mass., and in Sept., 1841 was appointed Chaplain in the US Navy. In 1866, the Western University of Pennsylvania conferred on him the honorary degree of S.T.D.
