- Physically he stood a little short of six feet; erect, well-proportioned and powerful. He was a handsome man, with a countenance as firm as Plymouth Rock. He was a caulker by trade, and was sought, far and near, to lead the crew on account of his skill. His word was his bond. His religious opinions were decided, and allowed no wavering of faith. For many years he was deacon of the Congregational Church, and as such, I suppose, to the end of his life, excused from service, for the last few years, on account of infirmities and distance. He regarded the Sabbath, and made it to be a matter of conscience to be early at the place of worship on that day, with such of his family as could properly attend.
He was very diffident, but had a clear and strong understanding. For his times and surroundings, he was a scholar; very observing, and of an investigating turn of mind. He was often employed as school-teacher in those new settlements. He was frequently chosen to the Board of Selectmen of the town, and his judgment was sought in council. He highly esteemed education and strove hard to give his children the best advantages for learning.
He loved his family and provided well for them. He played with his little children, but in his house, his nod or the tap of his foot, uttered undisputed command. He was of a very military turn, and in early life, served as first lieutenant of artillery. He lived to the age of eighty-two years, having enjoyed great respect as a citizen and neighbor. His descendants have been pre-eminently a race of literary men and educators, as will be noted in the subjoined record.
