    • Received his education in the schools of Dansville, N.Y. When fourteen years of age he assisted his father, who was Postmaster at Dansville at that time, also a Drugist in same place. He remained with his father in this business until his death, May 1849

      Served in the 37th New York National Guards in the Civil War. He was in the employ of the New York Manhatten Gas Company as Cashier for many years. In 1850, Mr. Shannon removed to Hornellsville, Steuben County, New York and later was engaged with the American Express Company and Erie Railroad which was completed May, 1852.

      In 1854 he went west and ws identified making Kansas a State at Leavenworth City in 1855 to 1861. Raised and equipped the first of the Fire Department in 1859 and 1860 when it consisted of six companies. Resigned in 1861 and returned to New York City where he took a position with the MAnhatten Gas Company April 10, 1861. It consolidated with five other companies in 1886, name then changed to "Consolidated Gas Company of New York."

      Mr. Shannon filled several prominent positions in this Company and was retired in 1901 with pension for life.

      He participated in the Civil War 1861 to 1865 as Quarter Master Sergeant of the 37th Regiment, National Guard, State of New York in defense of Washington, D.C., also in Gettysburg Campaign in defense of Harrisburg, PA in General Lee's raid through Pennsylvania also on duty in the Forts in and around New York Harbor and served seven years in National Guards, State of New York as Quarter MAster Sergeant of Regiment.
