- (Obituary from Detroit Free Press 11 Dec 1903:
"A Pioneer of Wayne Dead
Joseph Stringer Expired at Noon Yesterday
For Years He Was a Leading Farmer of Redford Township
The death of Joseph Stringer at his residence, 320 National Avenue, yesterday noon, closed a long and useful life. Mr. Stringer had been ill for several weeks and passed away in the presence of his entire family. He is survived by his wife and six children. His sons are Charles A., Will J. and Edwin S. and his daughters are Miss Mate A. Stringer, Mrs. D.B. Jackway and Mrs Lawson E. Becker. The deceased came to Detroit in 1835 and was a resident of this county from that time until his death. He was almost 80 years of age. He was married October 28, 1851 to Miss Margaret Sinclair. They settled on their farm in Nankin township, where they resided for over thirty years. In 1865 he became one of the leading and most thrifty farmers in Redford township and lived there about thirty years, when he became a resident of Detroit eighty years ago. Mr. Stringer was a charter member of the East Nankin Associate Reformed Presbyterian church, which was organized in 1846, and which, through the union of 1858, became a United Presbyterian congregation. The first trees felled in clearing the ground for that church building were felled by Mr. Stringer and his father. In 1865, he with his family, removed to Redford township, where he became a member of the Southfield United Presbyterian church. In 1895 he came to Detroit and connected with the First Prestbyterian church, corner of Grand River and Alexandrine avenues. He continued a member of the session of this congregation until his death. He was faithful in attendance, liberal in financial support and always loyal to his Master.")
